Oh NOEZZ, a chunk of ice broke off the Atlantic Ice Sheet!

Our good friend, “I Hate Conservativiots” sent me this today (bold mine):

“But only last year the lying troll said the ice in Antarctica was growing.”

“The fact that the calving events have gotten a little more frequent is not a good sign,” Shuman said. He adds there is no sign the trend is reversing.

Yep, it is growing (as of this date, anyway).

It grew between 2013 and 2015, dropped some in 2016 and we don’t yet know for 2017.

Not much change at all, however, since 1979. Since 2003 the trend is generally up.

  2. But your example of a “Manhattan size calve” wasn’t continental land ice, it was sea ice.

    So you run along now and argue with the National Snow and Ice Data Center. 🙂

    You cite years of growth as if that were the overall picture.

    For several, if not all the years you cite growth in sea ice, land ice was more than making up the difference for a net loss. Making your reference very misleading. Well, lying.

    So, if you’re going to talk about land ice talk about land ice. If you’re going to talk about sea ice then talk about the “Manhattan sized” chunk that calved off the shelf.

    I’m not painting any picture. I’m citing observational data. You’re trying to paint a picture.

    And you’re picture is very sloppily colored…you should try to better stay within the lines of Truth.

    East Antarctic land ice losses are being more than made up in the Western Antarctic snowfall (bold mine):

    “We’re essentially in agreement with other studies that show an increase in ice discharge in the Antarctic Peninsula and the Thwaites and Pine Island region of West Antarctica,” said Jay Zwally, a glaciologist with NASA Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland, and lead author of the study, which was published on Oct. 30 in the Journal of Glaciology. “Our main disagreement is for East Antarctica and the interior of West Antarctica – there, we see an ice gain that exceeds the losses in the other areas.” Zwally added that his team “measured small height changes over large areas, as well as the large changes observed over smaller areas.”

    The troll stands corrected, yet again.

    All the sea ice talk aside, it is quite clear that really when it comes to Antarctic ice and sea levels, sea ice is not the most important thing to measure. In Antarctica, the largest and most important ice mass is the land ice of the West Antarctic and East Antarctic ice sheets.

    Therefore, how is Antarctic land ice doing?

    Estimates of recent changes in Antarctic land ice (Figure 2, bottom panel) show an increasing contribution to sea level with time, although not as fast a rate or acceleration as Greenland. Between 1992 and 2011, the Antarctic Ice Sheets overall lost 1350 giga-tonnes (Gt) or 1,350,000,000,000 tonnes into the oceans, at an average rate of 70 Gt per year (Gt/yr). Because a reduction in mass of 360 Gt/year represents an annual global-average sea level rise of 1 mm, these estimates equate to an increase in global-average sea levels by 0.19 mm/yr.

    There is variation between regions within Antarctica (Figure 2, top panel), with the West Antarctic Ice Sheet and the Antarctic Peninsula Ice Sheet losing ice mass, and with an increasing rate. The East Antarctic Ice Sheet is growing slightly over this period but not enough to offset the other losses. There are of course uncertainties in the estimation methods but independent data from multiple measurement techniques (explained here) all show the same thing, Antarctica is losing land ice as a whole, and these losses are accelerating quickly.

    “Zwally still stands by his 2015 study, but in an interview last week, he said nature has recently changed the equation. His team is crunching numbers from the past two years, looking at ice melting and snowfall rates in Antarctica. And they found something startling.

    The melt rates in West Antarctica just increased significantly. His calculations now show that the continent is in overall balance. The findings haven’t been peer reviewed yet, but he plans to present them at a science conference later this year.”

    Well then when he presents the peer-reviewed findings we’ll evaluate them then.

    Until then they stand.

    Even if they don’t:
